Sheffield Theatres Win at the Theatre Awards UK

Client News

29 October 2012

At the Theatre Awards UK yesterday Sheffield Theatres won Best Supporting Performance for Aidan McArdle who appeared in Michael Frayn’s Democracy at the Theatre earlier this year.

Aiden McArdle won Best Supporting Performance for his witty and compelling portrayal of East German spy, Günter Guillaume, in Michael Frayn's multi award-winning play, Democracy.  This critically-acclaimed production, which appeared on the Crucible stage in March 2012 as part of Sheffield Theatres' Michael Frayn season, subsequently transferred to the Old Vic Theatre, London in June.

Speaking about the success at the awards Sheffield Theatres' Artistic Director Daniel Evans, said: ‘We are absolutely thrilled that Aidan won Best Supporting Performance. The Michael Frayn season was a landmark event for us and it is a testament to the work of director Paul Miller and the brilliant cast of Democracy that the production later transferred to the West End.  Aidan’s deserved success at the Theatre Awards UK is the icing on the cake.  He’s an extraordinarily gifted actor and everyone at Sheffield Theatres is proud of his success.'

Sheffield Theatres was nominated in three other categories at the awards – Best New Play, Best Performance in a Musical and Best Musical Production.

The Theatre Awards UK, previously the Theatrical Management Association Awards, honour outstanding work each year and are the UK’s only nationwide theatre awards, recognising achievement in regional theatre.
