Where is Private Investment in the Arts Going?

Industry News

16 May 2013

Arts & Business has just published its latest report on business investment in the arts in England 2011/12.  The report marks the fifth year of minimal growth in the UK economy since 2008 and records that:

  • business investment has rose by just £200,000 from the previous year from £113.6m to £113.8m
  • income from trusts and foundations increased by £23.7m to £173.8m
  • individual giving achieved £372.9m which is an additional £22.9m on the previous year.

Director of Arts & Business, Phillip Spedding comments on his concerns about the increasing reliance by the cultural sector on trust and foundation support, and the discrepancies on investment levels between London-based arts organisations and those outside London:

"it is a worrying time for arts organisations outside London. Those that will get through are those that will think imaginatively and creatively."

BBC Arts Reporter, Ian Youngs interviewed Northern Broadsides Artistic Director, Barrie Rutter about the impact of business investment on his company.
