New award for Music in the Round

28 August 2013

Sheffield-based chamber music promoter Music in the Round has claimed its third national award in nine months with the David Bedford Music Education Award for a new commission from its Children’s Composer in Residence, Paul Rissmann.

The award comes from PRS for Music Foundation – the UK's leading funder of new music in all genres - which selected the winner after a highly competitive two-stage process.

The award-winning new commission is for Stan and Mabel, based on the popular story by Jason Chapman. Like its predecessors, Stan and Mabel will feature active musical participation, colourful projections of images from the original book and additional music from great classical composers.

It will be performed for the first time this autumn. Polly Ives, who is Music in the Round's Education and Outreach manager as well as narrator of the concerts, commented:

"Stan and Mabel is a hugely exciting project that will enthuse and inspire lots of very young children and their grown-ups not just in Sheffield but around the UK, and it will inspire budding musicians. The combination of Paul Rissmann's music, Jason Chapman's book and the world-class musicians of Ensemble 360 is exactly what we need to get young people loving live classical music."

Ives added, "The concerts, aimed at schools and family audiences, play to packed houses all over the country, including performances at London's Wigmore Hall, reaching around 10,000 people a year and receiving consistently positive feedback from teachers, parents and children alike."

They are part of Music in the Round's mission to extend the audiences for chamber music, both at home in the Crucible Studio in Sheffield and in parts of the country otherwise poorly served for classical music in particular, through intense and exciting performance in an informal and accessible atmosphere.
