Grand Depart Cultural Festival 2014

Industry News

30 September 2013

It won't have skipped your notice that the Grand Depart, the opening days of the Tour de France, comes to Yorkshire in 2014.

From 5 July the race will run from Leeds to Harrogate and on 6 July from York to Sheffield.  2014 is the first time a Cultural Festival will be run prior to and alongside the Grand Depart.  The Festival will run from 27 March -6 July 2014, the start day being the 100 day milestone until the Tour comes to Yorkshire.

Festival organisers, Welcome to Yorkshire have secured funding from Arts Council England, local authorities and the private sector to:

  • create a global showcase for the best of Yorkshire's artistic talent
  • animate Yorkshire in the build up to and during Yorkshire Grand Depart
  • Ensure a broad approach to participation - engaging existing and new audiences and spectators from a diverse range of backgrounds
  • Produce activity that leaves a legacy for artists, participants and audiences
  • Create a celebration of community creativity.

Artists, arts organisations and members of the creative industries sector are now invited to propose works to be commissioned in response to the brief for the Cultural Festival. The open call for proposals focuses on the following themes:

  • True Grit - creative expressions of physical skill, courage and determination
  • Yorkshire 'en fete' - creative transformations of Yorkshire's culture, heritage and landscape, urban, rural and coastal.
  • World-Class Yorkshire - focus on Yorkshire's vibrant and innovative artists, arts organisations and members of its creative industries.

The deadline for proposals is Monday 14 October.  You can download a proposal form, email Jenny Rose or call 0113 322 3500 for further information.
